PIEDMONT Three people died early Wednesday in the fiery crash of a Tesla Cybertruck, authorities said.

A person following the Cybertruck when it crashed pulled a fourth person to safety, authorities said. That person was rushed to a hospital and sent into surgery, authorities said; they were reported to be in stable condition.

This is unprecedented in Piedmont, Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said. Its devastating.

It all happened about 3:08 a.m. Bowers said police received an alert from an iPhone in the car, notifying them of a possible crash and providing location information.

Bowers said when officers arrived to the intersection of Hampton Road and King Avenue, they saw the Cybertruck engulfed in flames. He said there was no indication that a mechanical defect had caused the crash or the subsequent fire.

Its too early to say if there were other factors, he said.

Authorities did not identify any of the three who died out of respect for the families, Bowers said. It was not clear Wednesday when authorities would publicly identify those killed. According to multiple media reports, the victims were recent graduates of Piedmont High School.

Bowers said the vehicle may have been going too fast at the time of the crash. The vehicle hit a retaining wall and then a tree, authorities said.

Bowers said people in both the Cybertruck and the vehicle following, who rescued the survivor, had been at the same function earlier.

Its good to know someone was willing to help, Piedmont Fire Chief David Brannigan said. It probably saved a life.

The early investigation did not reveal any obvious signs of an explosion or that the battery may have been a factor in starting the blaze, Brannigan said.

The California Highway Patrol took over the investigation.

The crash marked the second time this year in the East Bay that at least three people died in the wreck of an electric car. A family of four died in April when their Vinfast brand electric car crashed and caught fire in Pleasanton. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating that crash.
